Do fence post caps prevent rot?
Yes. They block water from entering exposed wood grain.
What size cap do I need?
Be sure to measure your post because size names don't always match the true size of the wooden post.
For example, a 4x4 post could be between 3 1/2 inches and 4 inches.
A 3 1/2" post requires a "nominal 4x4" fence post cap, but
a 4" post requires a "full 4x4" fence post cap.
Are metal caps better than wooden caps?
Yes. Metal caps last much longer and won’t absorb water.

I purchased a full 4x4 Copper Ball Fence Post Cap, one of several I have purchased in the past. I like the size of the cap because is is slightly larger than caps sold at other stores. I do not cap a fence post, rather use it as a finial on a copper trellis.
